Bio

Kristen Kaas is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer often using textile-based practices to create sculptural and installation pieces.

Born in Minnesota (USA), Kaas combines technical skill and artistry while employing a variety of traditional artisanal techniques including hand weaving, sewing, paper making, multiple art glass techniques, paper mache, and mold making (among others) to create spatial and temporal based pieces.  Kaas’ work largely deals with dissecting, exploring, and reacting to traumatic events from her past.  Kaas’ interests also lie in the idea behind synchronicities, or the occurrence of meaningful coincidences that seem to have no cause.  These ideas explore the intersections, relationships, and interconnectedness that we experience in daily life.  In 2022 Kaas established Studio KAAS - a design studio centered around a deep connection to the earth and aimed at creating furniture, apparel, decor, and lighting rooted in sustainable and alternative materials and processes.

Kristen Kaas has received funding from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, CERF+, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.  Her work has been seen in Dwell Magazine, Fiber Art Magazine, and Studio Blosem.  She holds a fine arts degree from the University of Minnesota and an Associate’s Degree in Apparel Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
